White Label Baltic Porter | Emerson's Brewery

Description: During the years of the Russian Empire, strong English stouts were exported through the Baltic, and when Russia shut out the English imports, English brewers established breweries in the Baltic. The success of these stouts also prompted local Baltic lager breweries to create their own versions, but these were fermented with bottom fermenting lager yeasts. Very smooth, strong, black, chocolate, and liquorice notes and the characters of a stout – Baltic Porters. A Baltic Porter has always been high on our list of potential Brewer’s Reserves. The main challenge has always been having enough of the right yeast to brew these big complex, dark lagers. Our North by North Czech style pilsner gave Jim, one of our very oldest brew crew members the opportunity he was looking for. Jim brewed our Baltic Porter way back in January using the North by North yeast, fermenting it at cool, lager temperatures then matured, or lagered, the beer for over three and a half months. The result is stunning. Malty, dark, and oh so smooooth, the malt and yeast are the real focus here, the hops are there just to provide that subtle balance. One of our locals commented it was a beautiful velvet hammer! (and sickle?) Jim has all his hopes set on this beer providing just the right ‘fireside action’ he’s looking for during our long Southern winter. Whilst we can’t make any promises in that area we know you will appreciate this black beauty from the Soviet era!
