Black Tar | Orchid Island Brewery
ABV: 11.0%
Style: Stout - Russian Imperial
Actively Produced
Description: This is our base Imperial Stout brewed with vanilla beans, roasted pecans and hazelnuts, cocoa nibs and locally roasted coffee beans. These adjuncts spent only a brief time in the secondary fermentation of this beer, so all the components are very subtle. We kegged half of this first commercially available batch of Black Tar and the other half went into Heaven Hill bourbon barrels to spend the next several months conditioning with even more vanilla beans, roasted pecans and hazelnuts, cocoa nibs and locally roasted Rio Coco coffee beans. That finished product is our Black Orchid Imperial Stout. The adjuncts will not be nearly as subtle in Black Orchid. Fact: Vanilla beans are derived from orchids in the genus "Vanilla," native to Mexico. The name "Vanilla" comes from the Spanish word "Vanilla", meaning "little pod." Vanilla beans are also referred to as pods or "Black Flower," after the mature bean, which shrivels and turns black shortly after it is picked.
